What Is Dental Insurance?
Traditional dental insurance is designed to provide regular care of teeth, mouth and gums.
Less than half of the U.S. population is covered by a dental insurance plan. Similar to health or medical insurance, dental insurance pays all or a percentage of the fee charged by a dentist for services.
Dental insurance can be an indemnity plan, a PPO (Preferred Provider Organization) or a Dental Health Maintenance Organization (DHMO).
Indemnity plans allow the consumer to use any dentist.
PPO plans give a better fee arrangement for using a dentist who participates in the PPO network
DHMO plans require consumers to use only the dentists in the DHMO network
